This car, three of which were built in 1938, comes from the prototype KdF (Volkswagen Beetle) and was designed for the race Berlin-Rome in autumn 1939, cancelled due to the outbreak of the 2nd World War. The car, based on the machine design of the Beetle, had an aerodynamic body designed by Erwin Komenda that had a drag coefficient of 0.295. The body was built by Reutter in Stuttgart with aluminum foils so thin (0.5 mm) as to risk the breaking or bruising when the doors had to be closed. The cabin was so tapered that it was necessary to move back the copilot's seat to allow his presence on board. This car is considered to be the forerunner of the first Porsche cars that recalled it also for their body shape.
