Built in 1970 exclusively for racing on slower circuits (Targa Florio e Nürburgring) because it was more lightweight and maneuverable than the 917, this 908.03 of the Gulf Team won the 1970 Targa Florio driven by Jo Siffert and Brian Redman. This car was equipped with a tubular chassis, a 2,997 cm³ 8-cylinder engine that developed 350 hp and weighed only 565 kg.

Mercury produced a second version: reference 309-b Porsche 908.03 SHELL # 22 white. Production: 1970.
