Abarth presented in 1966 at the Turin Racing Cars Motor Show his first V8 engine with a displacement of 2,000 cm³. It was an engine designed from scratch by Abarth and not derived from Fiat engines. The difficulty of tuning this unit suggested Abarth to change its displacement to 2,968 cm³ with a power of 350 hp. Abarth installed the new power unit on the tubular frame of the SE04/L with a modified wheelbase and a fiberglass body. The new car (SE013) was characterized by a radiator placed above the engine like a small spoiler. The SE013 debuted on the circuit of Aspern, near Vienna, driven by Peter Schetty and it managed to prevail in its class. This was mainly due to the driver's great capacity as the car proved to be very difficult to drive.
