In 1971 the Abarth was sold to the Fiat and the Abarth racing material was bought by Enzo Osella. Osella considered the 2000 Sport SE021 still competitive and modified it for the 1972 season by replacing the Abarth gearbox T 139, that had given so many problems during the previous year because of its fragility, with the Hewland gearbox, modifying the suspension attachments and providing the tailgate of a flashy spoiler. The Abarth Osella won the European Manufacturers' Championship and Arturo Merzario won the drivers' title. The car weighed 565 kg and its engine developed 270 hp enabling a top speed of 300 kph.
